Procedures for Lesson
1.During the course of a unit on poetry, students will have been exposed to a variety of poems read by individuals from a variety of backgrounds on the Favorite Poem Project website. They will also have been working on reading a variety of poems, in addition to writing some of their own. 2.As a culmination for the unit, each student will select a poem which is meaningful or significant to him/her in some way. 3.Students will publish a copy of their selected poem, together with a written explanation of the poem’s significance or appeal. 4.Student selections & explanations will be published in a class booklet (perhaps facilitated by uploading their final product to Google Docs). 5.Students will read their poems & discuss their significance in class
Assessment or Evaluation
Students will be evaluated for the final product on a rubric that assesses student preparation, delivery, discussion of poem’s relevance/appeal, use of work time.
Enrichment
Students could videotape their reading & explanation, like was done in the Favorite Poem Project videos. Videos could be uploaded to the school website.
